A Variac is a device that technically should be called an autotransformer. It allows you to take an AC current and variably step up or step down the voltage, in this case, from 110 volts all the way up to 280, and down to 0. It is extremely useful for motor control engineering, like I am doing.
This autotransformer is simple. As it should be. On the inside, there is a carbon contact that rides along a surface, ground into the top edge of a coil of copper wire. The position of the contact corresponds to the knob up on the top, which is the setting for the voltage.
The problem with this unit:(and I suspect ALL of this batch) As you dropped the voltage, the little carbon (read:BRITTLE) electrode falls off of the edge of the last copper coil on top of the unit, and as the user tries to turn it up again, the carbon electrode breaks from the stress. It needs a small piece of something to level out the surface.
Well, here comes the seller to the rescue. I sent him a pretty tough email, because I was ticked. He answered right back and finally, after diagnosing the problem, he took one unit he had in stock apart and sent me an entire center assembly. I fixed the deficit so it wouldn't happen again ( I think I epoxied a little piece of plastic in there or something) and reassembled it. It works great now.
So the piece was flawed, but fixable. The Seller was great. And I had the patience to fix the thing. It all worked out great.
