I have installed two of these transfer switches, one in my home and one for my sister. If you are a good handyman like me and not affraid of working with electric, this is the easiest I have seen. I looked over the Reliant at Home Depot and Lowes. I didn't like the proprietary breakers in the Reliant. This transfer switch has as much flexability as any one could want for swaping breakers and buy them local. Each complete kit took me about five hours to install. The only extras I had to buy was a roll of #10-3/wg wire to run from the switch to the inlet box, two cable clamps to fasten the cable at the inlet box and at the transfer switch, and some cable staples to fasten the cable to the floor joists. You will need at least a 5/16 inch bit to drill holes for the cable and a few screws to hang the boxes. Because I am a perfectionist, I did add a couple of optional items. I swaped the standard steel crews in the aluminum inlet box for stainless steel ones to prevent rust, and I added a metal flip cover on the inlet to keep bugs from making a home of the inlet holes and keep the contacts dry. Don't buy the expensive flip cover they have for this at the GenTran site. I bought a metal spring loaded flip cover like they use on outside outlets at the local hardware and put it on for about 5 bucks, again using stainless steel screws. If you think you will ever add up to 10 circuits, go ahead and pull the extra wires from the switch to the main panel before you mount it. It will be hard to pull the wires once the switch is in place. I used all #12 wire for the branch circuits from the switch to the main panel. Also you may not need a 60 amp double pole breaker in the main pannel if you won't be pulling that much load. I had a 50 amp on hand and used it with no problem so far. Don't expect to put big loads on this switch like a water heater or AC. I hooked up a kitchen circuit, gas furnace, two light circuits, bathroom, bedroom, livingroom circuit, just the small things we really needed most scattered throughout the house. I am using this with a 5500 watt generator. I would certainly recommend this product over any other brand I have seen so far.
